Linguistic Chauvinism: My thoughts.

saifahmadkhan.wordpress.com
Every individual is born with multiple identities; at first people identify him or her as a boy or a girl. As the individual grows up, he or she comes to bear a religious identity and his or her occupational identity: a doctor, a teacher, a businessman and so on. But he or she also comes to bear another identity, which is, his/her linguistic identity. These various identities make up an individual, they make him or her independent. And, when you take away any of these identities, yo are in a way making the person handicap. Linguistic chauvinism is the act of harboring the idea that one's language is superior to others, so much so that it may lead to enforcement of one's language on others, and thus destroying the linguistic identity of others.

"Be it the Germans imposing German language on the French after the Prussian war or the Indians' Hindi language being chained in shackles by the British, it has always been 'language' bearing the bitter repercussions." Soon after, people become oblivious to their own mother tongue and lose their feelings of nationalism.

See, Linguistic chauvinism is the ardent love of a person for his or her language but to oppress that of others, I feel it is very wrong. Sure, you should love and respect your own language but you should also be open to that of others because that is the least you can do to ensure harmony.
